Eric reflected in Always Look on the Bright Side of Life: A Sortabiography: "In the Nineties, I had worked on a Python CD-ROM game of The Holy Grail. If it could become a game, I wondered, why couldn't it become a musical?"

"When I got to LA in 1994, my old friend (record producer) Bob Ezrin was working at 7th Level. They were doing an amazing job with The Complete Waste of Time, their first CD-ROM game. I was very impressed. I discovered that the internet seemed to be composed of people who were fans of The Stones and Monty Python. This is where the term Spam originated, from one of our sketches...

I became actively involved with 7th Level as a producer and contributor on their next game – this one. I am proud to say I contributed Dedris, which was Tetris with Dead Bodies. I think working on this started the germs of the idea that led to Spamalot.

7th Level also kindly fathered and supported PythOnline – a website I started.  I had been searching for a home for it. Here we bashed out daily gags and I answered questions in what was essentially an early form of Twitter. My favourite exchange:

You're not Eric Idle.

             Well fuck off then.

Oh. You are!"
